Subject: Guobao's Case - Update I

 Finally I reached Guobao's wife. She has been staying
 in hospital all time in the past two months. It is a
 kind of difficult to contact her because there is no
 phone for them in the hospital.
 
 According to her, Guobao is OK (what else can she say in
 this situation?), but experiences some pain due to the
 operation and some infection. A bigger problem is that
 he is depressed from time to time. That is understandable, 
 I may not do any better myself in such condition. I asked 
 her to pass the best wishes from all 7773 classmates to
 Guobao, and said that all of us missed him in last year's 
 reunion. I also told her to take good care of Guobao 
 not only as a wife, but also on behalf of all 7773 classmates.
 
 I mentioned that all of us are willing to share the 
 financial burden a little bit. She said the burden is
 still bearable (keyi Chengshou) and they don't need 
 financial help yet. The cost for hospital is about
 15000 yuan/month, of which the institute covers 95%.
 She is taking a long term leave and is paid the basic
 salary of about 200 yuan/month. They have a 13 year old
 daughter. 
 
 I figured that they need about 800 yuan/month for the 5%
 hospital cost. That does not leave them much for any
 thing else. I suggest we do two things at this stage:
 
 1. Every 7773 classmates sends a letter or card to Guobao
 to encourage him. I'll publish their mailing address
 today when I get to my office. It is 5am right now.
 
 2. Donate $100 each if you like. I think we can get close
 to $1500 in this way. I'll try to convince his wife
 to accept this offer and to give me their bank account
 today. Otherwise I'll send the fund to them by mail.
 Anyway I'll transfer $500 today and the rest later.
 
 I am encouraged by response on this board and in e-mail. 
 I am sure what we are doing will give Guobao a big boost 
 to fight the cancer.
