Homework 4

Due: 5/16/07

1. Is there any validity to the process of building computer models of cognition? If so, how do these models help us understand the human mind? If not, by what other mechanisms should researchers be testing and refining their theories of cognition?

3. What, if anything, did you learn about the applications of cognitive psychology to your own life that you weren't aware of before you took this class. Give two or three examples.

5. What do you think makes a person an expert? How does their knowledge differ from that of a novice - do they just have more, or is it something deeper? How does this tie into the issues of problem representation raised in question 1?

6. How is decision making like problem solving? How is it different? Is there a "problem space" for decision making? Provide examples to illustrate your points.

7. Can machines "think"? Put another way, is it even theoretically possible that, some day, we will construct an artificial intelligence that we would recognize as being "conscious"?
