Homework 1

Due: 2/23/07

1. How are Rationalism and Empiricism integrated into our modern conception of what it means to "do science"?

2. Briefly describe behaviorism. What is the major flaw of behaviorism?

3. What are the primary differences between bottom-up and top-down processes in perception? How do they work together to determine what we actually perceive?

4. Discuss the merits of using lesion studies to explore localization of function. Describe in as much detail as possible at least one finding generated with a lesion study, and whether you think that finding is compelling or not.

5. The Word Superiority Effect is an example of top-down processing at work. Briefly describe the effect. Would the word superiority effect be possible if reading was not an automatic process?

6. Do you think the subtraction method is a valid way of theorizing about cognitive processes? Why or why not?

7. Why is it useful for our perception to be different than sensation? Wouldn't it be better if we always only saw exactly what was there?
